Raw (Green) Tomato Chutney

Green tomato chutney serves as a perfect accompaniment for idli, dosa,and even rice. This is a quick and easy chutney , made with a raw tomato and a handful of other ingredients.

INGREDIENTS

Serves – 3-4

  • Raw tomato – 4 , large, roughly chopped
  • Garlic – 8 cloves
  • Ginger – 2-3 inch, sliced
  • Green Chillies – 4-5 (depending on the spice level)
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  • Urad dal – ½ tsp
  • curry leaves – 1sprig
  • Sesame oil – 2 tbsp
  • Salt – to taste

METHOD

1. Heat the sesame oil in a pan and add in the roughly chopped tomatoes, garlic , ginger and green chillies.

2. Saute on a medium flame, till the tomatoes turn soft.

3. Let it cool down. Transfer the contents into a blender. Add some salt and grind.

4. Transfer the blender contents into a bowl and check for salt. Heat some oil and add the mustard seeds, urad dal, and curry leaves. Pour this tempering onto the chutney. Mix well.

5. Serve hot with idli, dosa or rice with a dollop of ghee on it.

NOTES

  1. Do not add any water while grinding the chutney.
  2. Grind it to a coarse consistency if making them as a side dish for chapathis.
  3. If the tomatoes aren’t tangy enough, feel free to squeeze in some lime juice after tempering.
