Watching a movie? What’s the best companion while doing so? Mine is popcorn. A big bowl full of crunchy buttery salted popcorn and off late, these cruncy, spicy low calorie roasted fox nuts. Since these foxnuts/makahan/lotus seeds can be made at home easily, we can always play around with the spices that go into it. Loaded with calcium , potassium and magnesium these are great for bone health and help in maintaining the blood pressure. These are a much better alternative to potato crisps.
Let’s roast some fox nuts shall we?
INGREDIENTS
Makes 2 cups
- Fox nuts – 2 cups
- Oil/butter/ghee – 2- 3 tsp
- Red chilli powder – 1 tsp
- Chaat masala – 1/2 tsp
- Salt- to taste
METHOD

- Dry roast the makhanas on medium flame.

2. Unroasted makhanas/fox nuts are usually soft. When roasted they turn crispy. Dry roast till the makhanas/fox nuts till it can be crushed into small poeces easily when pressed between the fingers. Once well roasted transfer to a plate

3. In the same pan heat some oil/butter/ghee. Once hot enough, put off the stove and add the spices and salt. Mix well. To this spice mix add , the dry roasted fox nuts/makhana. Mix well till all the nuts/makhanas are coated with the spice.

4. Once cool store in an airtight container for upto 2 weeks.
NOTES
- You can always play with the spice combination.
- Store in an airtight container after roasting to prevent them from getting soft.
